I’ll never forget the first time I watched the video of Simon Sinek at TEDxPugetSound giving the “Start with Why” talk. It blew me away and like Simon, it changed the way I approach the world.
If you are reading this blog you have an area or two in your life that you’d like to make significant changes. Before you can get started you need to know WHY you want to make that change.
While Simon’s talk was about business, the lessons apply to us as people. You won’t buy your OWN marketing messages to yourself if there isn’t a good enough WHY behind them.
Saying, “I want to spend more time with my family” or “I want to contribute more to my retirement account” isn’t strong enough.
The “Outside-In” marketing message sounds like this:
“I rearranged my calendar to spend more time with my family. I want them to know how much they mean to me.”
The “Inside-Out” marketing message sounds like this:
“I only have one life to live, no matter how long or short. To maximize my life I am going to completely orient my life around the things that are most important to me. Let’s start with my family.”
Which one of those marketing messages is going to hold up under pressure?
When your boss comes in and asks you to stay late, but you already have a commitment to take your daughter shopping for a prom dress?
When a client calls in the middle of dinner, which of those marketing messages is going to keep the phone in your pocket?
When your WHY is strong enough, it will overcome the day to day pressures of life.
